A JRSO stands for Junior Road Safety Officer. Primary schools from across the UK select pupils to become a JRSO usually from primary 5, 6, or 7 to help promote and champion road safety issues. The JRSO is assisted by an adult co-ordinator and some schools also involve other pupils to help form a JRSO team. The JRSO and their assistants are very important within the local community and work with their local Road Safety Officer to help keep streets safe.

The Lollipop Person of the Year is a great way for you to raise road safety awareness and get everyone in your school involved. This competition provides the opportunity for you to get across the message of being street safe through lots of fun activities.
JRSO's have lots of important jobs to carry out throughout the year so here are a few ideas about how the Lollipop Person of the Year can help you and your school stay road smart:
Talk at assemblies and to classes on road safety topics...why not tell pupils about the important job that your lollipop person does? You could invite your local lollipop hero into the classroom to share their experiences and help you talk to pupils about what they do to make sure everyone is safe when crossing the road.
Run competitions in the school...why not ask pupils to come up with ideas to show why your lollipop person is the best in the country? You could give out prizes to the top 3 ideas then use the best to form the focus of the whole school.
Write letters...why not ask your teacher for a template letter to write to your local MP about the lollipop person of the year competition? You and your JRSO team can generate awareness about the fantastic job that they do to keep children safe on the roads.
Get involved in organising safe and active travel activities...why not print off Lolli and Poppy cut outs and badges from the Lollipop person of the year website? You could get your whole school wearing these badges so everyone knows how important it is to cross the road with your lollipop person. You could also post pictures of Lolli and Poppy on your central notice board with handy safety tips.
Just like being a JRSO there's no one right or wrong way to take part so why not use your imagination, have some fun, and get involved in the Lollipop Person of the Year? You could be driving your school to 2010 success!
